The Australian Museum was established in 1827 and is actually Australia's first public museum. It is located just across Hyde Park in Sydney and has three levels of exhibitions covering the areas of animal science, mineral science and cultures which include Skeletons, Birds & Insects, Planet of Minerals and Indigenous Australian. It's a very kid-friendly museum with lots of features targeted at children such as the Dinosaurs space, Kidspace (a mini museum for the under 5s), and the 'Search and Discover' area, a great information and resource centre for students.Besides, its permanent exhibits and space areas, the Museum also hosts many changing exhibitions. One such exhibition is the 'Deep Oceans Exhibition' which will be running from 16th of June till 14th of October 2012. Come and discover strange and rarely seen creatures of the deep, living under some of the most inhospitable conditions on Earth.
Some exhibition highlights include:
. See amazing glow-in-the-dark sea creatures from the depths of the abyss.
. Discover the deep-ocean sponges that contain cancer-fighting compounds.
. Meet the Museum’s infamous Mr Blobby, a fathead found more than 1000m deep in the Tasman Sea.
. Escape the jaws of an Anglerfish.
. Look inside a replica of the Bathysphere, the first submersible to descend beyond light, and experience a dive to the depths.
. Come face to face with a five-metre model of a Giant Squid – the biggest invertebrate on Earth.
. Feel the enormous water pressure at great ocean depths.
. Learn about the new technology oceanographers are using to map out the 25 million seamounts lying hidden below the waves.
. Follow the special Octonauts themed trail for under 5s.
The Deep Oceans Exhibition is a collaboration with Questacon – The National Science & Technology Centre.
